Acting Chief Justice Calls for Holistic Approach to Strengthen Integrity at National Integrity Summit

Acting Chief Justice Ambeng Kandakasi

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea — Acting Chief Justice Ambeng Kandakasi has called for a comprehensive, "wholistic approach" to addressing issues of integrity and ethical conduct in Papua New Guinea. Speaking at the 2nd National Integrity Summit held at APEC Haus, Kandakasi emphasized the need for a concerted effort to reform the country's systems, starting with the foundation of society: the family unit.

In his powerful address, Kandakasi stressed that the root of many systemic challenges lies in a lack of integrity, honesty, and respect, qualities that must be instilled from an early age.

"We need a wholistic approach to review our systems. We need to start in the family unit to strengthen integrity, honesty, and respect," Kandakasi said. "It is within our homes, with our children, that we must begin to teach the values that are vital to building a fair and just society."

The summit brought together key leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector to discuss ways to improve the country's national integrity system. Kandakasi’s remarks resonated deeply with attendees, highlighting the interconnectedness of societal values and the broader systems that govern Papua New Guinea.

A Call to Strengthen National Systems
Kandakasi argued that without addressing the fundamental issue of values at the family level, efforts to reform the nation’s institutions would be incomplete. He proposed that reform must begin with instilling integrity in individuals, which would then extend to communities, institutions, and ultimately the entire nation.

"We cannot expect our institutions to function with integrity if the individuals within them do not possess it. The fight for a corruption-free nation starts with each of us, and it starts in our homes," Kandakasi added.

His call for action echoed the sentiments of other summit speakers who have long advocated for the integration of ethical standards into everyday life. This message also aligned with the broader objectives of the summit, which aims to create a unified vision for transparency and accountability in all sectors of society.

Reinforcing Values for a Better Future
The Acting Chief Justice’s call for a shift in focus towards the family unit as the first step in combating corruption and promoting integrity was met with strong approval from the summit’s participants. Many attendees agreed that while systemic reforms are necessary, the transformation must be underpinned by a cultural shift towards greater personal accountability and ethical behavior.

The family, according to Kandakasi, is the starting point for this transformation. Parents, guardians, and community leaders play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation, teaching them the importance of honesty, respect, and integrity in all aspects of life.

National Integrity as a Collective Responsibility
The National Integrity Summit provided a platform for various sectors to share ideas and strategies for strengthening governance and transparency. Speakers from government and civil society organizations reiterated the importance of collaborative efforts to improve the nation’s systems, but Kandakasi’s message about personal responsibility and values stood out as a critical element for lasting change.

As Papua New Guinea continues its efforts to strengthen its national integrity system, Kandakasi’s call to focus on the family unit serves as a powerful reminder that the journey towards a more transparent and ethical society begins with the values we impart on future generations.

In closing, Kandakasi urged every citizen, from the youngest child to the oldest leader, to consider their role in fostering a culture of integrity. He reinforced the idea that every small action, taken collectively, contributes to the greater good.

"The change we seek begins with us, with our families, and with our communities," Kandakasi concluded. "Together, we can build a nation that values honesty, respect, and integrity in every aspect of life."
