Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea — Transparency International Papua New Guinea (TIPNG) Chairman, Peter Aitsi, called for greater accountability from those in power during his address at the inaugural Media Freedom Day Breakfast on May 3rd, 2022, at the Gateway Hotel. Aitsi emphasized the shared responsibility of the media and organizations like TIPNG to hold public officials accountable for their actions and decisions.

In his powerful speech, Aitsi highlighted the importance of the media in ensuring that leaders are answerable for the impact their decisions have on the public.

"What is the relevance of TI to the work of the media? Well, I believe we have a shared role - and that is to hold those in power, accountable," Aitsi said. "Accountable for the decisions they make on behalf of we, the people, accountable for the use, or misuse of public funds - the taxes that we all pay, accountable for the deteriorating government services such as the condition of our hospitals, the overcrowding and poor facilities of our schools, and the very poor state, of what we call the public service."

Aitsi’s comments resonated deeply with the media professionals in attendance, reinforcing the critical role that journalists play in holding the government and its representatives accountable to the people they serve. His speech also drew attention to the deteriorating public services in the country, including healthcare and education, stressing that it is essential to ensure that public funds are spent wisely and efficiently.

The Media Freedom Day Breakfast event, organized by TIPNG, provided a platform for discussions on media rights, freedom of expression, and the importance of transparency in governance. Aitsi’s address underlined the urgency of these issues, reminding everyone present of the media’s role as a watchdog and a voice for the people.

As TIPNG continues its mission to fight corruption and promote transparency, Aitsi called on both the media and the public to remain vigilant and work together in ensuring that those in positions of power are held accountable for their actions.
