Media Council of PNG Strengthens Ties with Lae Media Fraternity

MCPNG Editors who travelled to Lae to reconnect with Morobe-based media personnel on the Council’s first ever regional outreach visit.

Lae, Papua New Guinea — The Media Council of PNG (MCPNG) has taken a significant step in its reform agenda by reconnecting with Lae-based media personnel, highlighting its commitment to addressing the challenges faced by regional journalists and strengthening ties with the country’s media fraternity.

This important initiative took place alongside the first Community Coalition Against Corruption (CCAC) National Meeting held in Lae on April 24. Supported by the Media Development Initiative (MDI), the MCPNG utilized the opportunity to meet with Lae-based journalists, listen to their concerns, and engage in meaningful discussions about improving their work environment.

Engaging with Regional Media Personnel
The session brought together selected editors representing MCPNG member organizations and Lae-based journalists. These editors actively listened to the challenges raised by their regional counterparts, offering practical advice and sharing strategies to navigate common issues faced by journalists operating outside Port Moresby.

Editors with established offices in Lae also acknowledged the concerns raised by their teams, promising to address these issues and implement supportive measures to enhance the effectiveness of their operations. Among the key issues discussed were limited resources, communication barriers with head offices, and the need for greater professional development opportunities.

MCPNG President Neville Choi stressed the importance of open dialogue during the meeting, encouraging Lae-based journalists to speak candidly about their challenges.

"We want you to feel comfortable sharing the realities you face daily. Your honesty will help us and your editors better understand your struggles and implement practical solutions that have proven effective in similar situations. Your role as storytellers is invaluable, and we are here to ensure you have the support you need to continue excelling in your work,"Choi said.

Rebuilding Relationships and Strengthening Support
This initiative marks the first of a series of regional-focused efforts by MCPNG to rebuild and strengthen relationships with journalists operating in remote and regional areas. Recognizing that many of these media personnel work independently with limited resources and support from their Port Moresby-based head offices, the MCPNG is prioritizing their needs as part of its broader reform agenda.

The council’s approach aims to create a stronger, more inclusive network of journalists across Papua New Guinea. By fostering open communication and collaboration between regional media personnel and their editors, MCPNG hopes to address the challenges head-on and provide tangible solutions that benefit all members of the media fraternity.

Future Plans for Regional Outreach
The Media Council’s partnership with ABC International Development through the Media Development Initiative plays a crucial role in its ability to extend this outreach. Building on the success of the Lae engagement, MCPNG plans to visit other regions across Papua New Guinea to reconnect with media personnel and ensure their voices are heard.

"This is just the beginning," Choi said. "Our goal is to engage with journalists across the country, understand their unique challenges, and work together to create a more supportive and effective media environment. We are committed to providing the resources and guidance necessary for all journalists to thrive."

Commitment to Journalistic Excellence
The MCPNG’s efforts to strengthen ties with regional journalists are part of its broader mission to promote journalistic excellence, transparency, and accountability in Papua New Guinea. By addressing the unique challenges faced by regional media personnel, the council aims to empower journalists to continue their vital work as the nation’s storytellers.

This initiative underscores the Media Council’s dedication to ensuring that all journalists, regardless of location, receive the recognition and support they deserve. It reflects the council’s belief that a well-connected, well-supported media network is essential for fostering a vibrant and informed society.
